I liked this, though not as much as some of Tan's other novels - it's very different, more epic in scope (and very long), and has quite a lot of sex in it (not surprisingly, for a book about courtesans). As always with her novels, it's very well written, and I assume historically plausible, but there were times when I just wanted a little less detail about the characters' lives and wished the story moved forward in time a little faster.
