Merton in Bloom Winner!

Olivia enterred a contest last spring through school to draw a picture of a garden for Merton in Bloom, which is an initiative to encourage gardens and flowers in our borough of London (there's a London-wide one as well, London in Bloom, and presumably, other boroughs have their own awards).  Awards are made for actual gardens (e.g. best front garden (several size categories), best hanging basket, best balcony, best commercial property, best allotment plot and so on) and there are 3 age categories for best drawing of a garden (3-6, 7-10 and 11-14).  We were invited to the Awards Ceremony at the Civic Centre, as Olivia won in her age category.  One of the prizes she received was a hooded sweatshirt with a print of her drawing on it (the other two winners also got one each, with their own drawings on).

A bit of a closeup of the hoodie

and here she is modelling it.

She received her award from the Mayor of Merton

and in addition to the hoodie, had a nice certifcate and and a physical award whatsit (not sure what to call it - it's not a plaque, it's not a trophy).

She also had a free family ticket to the really big local fireworks (for Bonfire night), which is fun.

Well done, Olivia!

Dinner, 21/10/13: Chili Enchiladas

Enchiladas are one of those meals that always taste great, but look messy. This time, I used some leftover chili from the freezer for the filling, so it was a very quick weeknight meal. Yum!

Dinner, 20/10/13: Ghobeli

This is a rice and lamb dish with carrots (as you may be able to tell from the photo). It has a garnish of pistachios and dried cranberries, which we think works fantastically well with it.  This is a staple in our house (in as much as anything is).

Art (and stuff)

The Tate Britain has had an exhibit of paintings by the British artist L.S.Lowry on show for a while (unfortunately, a lot of the time was while we were away this summer) and I had hoped to get up to see them. Today was the last day of the exhibit, and while I thought our chances of getting tickets were slim, it was worth a shot - worst case scenario, we could look around the permanent exhibit at the Tate and then either wander London or go home.  So I took the children who wanted to come (which turned out to be Olivia and Alex) and caught a train to town.

(There's a great row of pollarded trees in the road outside the Tate.)

As suspected, there were no tickets avaialable until 6pm, and as we didn't want to stay that long (it was 1 ish), we opted for a browse around the regular galleries instead, including some Henry Moore pieces

(the pieces were more than heads, but I just really like the heads on these two);

and some miscellaneous bits and pieces, including a collection of maquettes (scale models) for a Reg Butler sculpture called The Unknown Political Prisoner (not sure how big the proper sculpture is, but I loved the maquettes, which were quite small - the prisoner in this one was only a few centimetres high).

We did manage to see one Lowry painting, which was in the general collection, rather than the special exhibit, so I was pleased to see that. Just wish the timing had been better for the exhibit (like if it had lasted until the end of October, I could have gone during half term).  The next special on is Paul Klee, though, which is a must see, so I'll have to make sure to hit that one. Perhaps I'll even book in advance for that!

We also had a look around the Turner wing - I like some Turner more than others, though I can admire them all - ultimately, I prefer the more abstract ones, I think.  I liked the cow detail from larger painting

and I loved the just barely visible people in this Riva degli Schiavione, Venice: Water Fete.

There were also a few small paintings on board (I think) of a few figures on a beach, which struck me, but no photo of them.

Alex enjoyed the Turners as well, though he liked the room of Constable paintings better, apparently.

After we left the gallery, we walked a little along the river and then caught a bus up to Covent Garden to grab some ice cream or coffee, depending on what the weather did...

I always enjoy the views from London buses, and recommend travelling by bus rather than underground wherever you can!

In Covent Garden, after a brief stop in the Doc Marten shop to eye up the sale boots (Olivia tried to talk me into the blue ones, but I resisted nobly)

we headed off to Scoop to get our ice cream. Never mind that it was raining - who would let a little rain stand between themselves and gelato? Especially in London!

Dinner, 19/10/13: Golden Veggie Shepherd's Pie

Not sure why this is called Golden Veggie Shepherd's Pie, as it's not particularly golden (I guess the cheesy topping turns it a little golden) - but we like it and it makes a nice dinner for those slightly chilly nights. It's mainly lentils, carrots, celery in the filling (and usually mushrooms, but I forgot to buy them today, much to the children's pleasure - well, two out of three children, anyway). It was still tasty, though.

Have your cake...but not eat it

One of Olivia's art projects this year was to design a cake, then make it out of clay. She chose a Guns and Roses theme (she's not a huge GnR fan in terms of music, though she likes them ok, but I think she wanted something she could be clever with).  I think it turned out very well - the two cupcakes are individual and they sit on the plate, or not, as you like.

18 October 2013

Rice pudding

I like mine with a bit of jam or fruit compote on; Geoff likes his with Golden Syrup (but I find that a bit sweet). Tasty. If I do say so myself...

Dinner, 18/10/13: Belly Pork, Yorkshire Puddings, Spring Greens, Gravy

Mmm, little Yorkshire puddings. Didn't rise as much as sometimes, but excellent texture inside anyway.

Happy birthday Geoff!

A few presents from the kids; Geoff and I have decided to go out to a very nice restaurant in lieu of presents this year...  We'll split the difference between our birthdays and go in early November.

17 October 2013

A little owl told me...

This week's nail art - only one on each hand is an owl (takes too long, I think) but actually, I think the dots are fairly cool as well...

16 October 2013

Dinner, 16/10/13: Cheesy Leek & Broccoli Bake

This is another of those easy, comforting dishes - this one is broccoli, leeks, some bacon and cherry tomatoes in a cheesy sauce. Yum.

15 October 2013

Dinner, 15/10/13: Curried Vegetable Broth

This was a lovely, hearty soup, nice and creamy with curry spices. And the fried onions on top were great. Mainly root veg, very simple and just what you want on a chilly autumn evening...

14 October 2013

Dinner, 14/10/13: Five Spice Chicken and Courgettes

A simple stir-fry dish of chicken and courgettes, spiced mainly with five-spice powder, and a few other things. Falls into the quick, healthy, tasty section of our menus...

12 October 2013

Dinner, 12/10/13: Lasagne with Pesto

In a bit of a reversal from the usual way of things - After & Before!

11 October 2013

Dinner, 11/10/13: Tomato and Chorizo Rice

Another dish from the current Good Food Magazine. This one was also excellent, and very quick and easy - a definite midweek supper in a hurry kind of dish.  The only change I made was to add about twice as many olives as in the recipe - but we're not a half-a-jar-of-olives kind of family...

10 October 2013

Dinner, 10/10/13: Sticky Citrus Chicken with Carrots and Cashews (Sarah)

Sarah's night to cook, and she made this, which is from the current Good Food magazine - it's the featured recipe on their website, as it happens, and understandably so, as it was excellent. I didn't have it for dinner as I was going to yoga, but it smelled great and everyone raved. I'll have some for lunch tomorrow - really looking forward to it!

08 October 2013

Dinner, 8/0/13: Fusili with Prawns and basil pesto

This was good (but not great); quick and easy. Gino's Pasta.

07 October 2013

Dinner, 7/10/13: Simple Lentil Soup & Cornbread

This soup is basically a lentil and carrot soup from my Covent Garden soup cookbook, though I admit to chucking in a carton of (Covent Garden) Carrot & Coriander soup I had in the fridge, which wanted using up...

And cornbread, too. Geoff doesn't much like cornbread, but the kids and I all are big fans and, like American biscuits, it has the advantage of being a bread-type product which can be made in about half an hour. Always a plus on busy nights.

06 October 2013

Dinner, 6/10/13: Pot Roast

DoE practice weekend: The Aftermath

Picked up Sarah and a friend from the station yesterday afternoon - they were so tired that Sarah actually turned down the offer of a coffee from Starbucks.

Here's the tent drying (sort of) in the sun - luckily, there is supposed to be more sun later, which should help.(I haven't put it out on the grass, as the grass is still soaking wet!)

05 October 2013

Dinner, 5/10/13: Mushroom and Pancetta Risotto

Fresh Bread for Lunch

Only from the bread machine, but it still makes the house smell fantastic...

04 October 2013

Dinner, 4/10/13: Filled Pasta with Tomato & Mascarpone

Olivia cooked again (though this is more of an assembly meal) - this is our quick go-to meal - perfect for nights when we are rushed, or not sure what time dinner is going to happen, or need something flexible, etc. Tonight it was because Geoff was on his way home from Switzerland, and we weren't sure what time he'd be back and how much time he'd want to work before eating - as this meal only takes about half an hour from start to finish but can stay in the oven a little longer if necessary, it was perfect.

03 October 2013

Duke of Edinburgh Award

Sarah's working on her Bronze Level of the Duke of Edinburgh award, with school.  She's done the first three parts - (Volunteering, Physical and Skills), now it's just the expedition left. They were supposed to do this part last early summer, but due to the illness of a staff member, had to postpone it. So, this weekend is the practice weekend and next weekend the real thing. At this level, it's only one night. Here's Sarah's pack ready to go (except a few last-minute items). Apparently, they have to walk about 3 miles on Friday evening and 8 or so on Saturday. It's a pretty heavy pack.  Glad it's not me going!

02 October 2013

Dinner, 2/10/13: Chicken Korma

Olivia cooked tonight, from a recipe we've used before many times. She wanted to do more cooking, which is great, and I had a nasty headache all afternoon and evening, so the timing was perfect.  And it was lovely, going upstairs to have a soaky bath and coming out of the bathroom to the fantastic aromas of this cooking. Mmm...  Who says teenagers aren't good for anything?
