Visionary Arts Museum

We had a short trip up to Baltimore to visit the American Visionary Arts Museum today - no plans until the evening.  Outside, they have a cool sculpture garden area...

Inside, there were no photos allowed, which was a shame, as there were many, many cool pieces, especially in their current exhibition, which was about storytelling.   I wondered what, exactly, made something visionary art; their website says:  "Visionary art as defined for the purposes of the American Visionary Art Museum refers to art produced by self-taught individuals, usually without formal training, whose works arise from an innate personal vision that revels foremost in the creative act itself."  There's quite a bit more about what they choose and why on their website, if you are interested. It was a cool museum; I would definitely go again.

And it has the most amazing shop, full of all kinds of funky things (in addition to lots of books about art, etc) - odd toys, collectibles, jewellery, magnets, badges, art pieces, just about anything you could name, they have it. (She did not buy the glasses, although we did come away with an orange scarf & earrings, a couple of badges, some magnets, a 3D penguin postcard and a number of Avenger-shaped Pez dispensers!)
