A trip to the National Zoo today, to meet up with some friends - Barbara, who lives locally, and Todd & Sarah, who now live in Portland, though are from the DC area originally (we all went to college together a million years ago).
I had forgotten just how long the escalator is at Woodley Park...
I don't have a lot of animal photos, as animals move around a lot, so they are hard to photograph. Also, it was drizzly most of the day, so we spent a lot of time in the houses, where it's harder to take photos because of the glass...
We visited the reptile house as Todd & Sarah's older son is a big fan of reptiles - he likes the snakes best, especially the cobras.
We also checked out the invertebrates (a personal favourite, though I couldn't get a photo of the cuttlefish, which I love - too blurry)
And we saw some small mammals, like this golden lion tamarin.
We watched a beaver having a snack
and a bald eagle spying on us from a distance.
Todd & Sarah's younger son spent as long as he was allowed playing in the water feature, which was very cool - in several ways - the spouts came on and off, unpredictably, and there was also a bit which created a kind of small tide rushing in. If it had been as hot as it was last time we were at the zoo 3 years ago, I think the adults would have been in the water feature as well!
Unfortunately, we didn't get to see the giant pandas - this sign was up at the panda house around 3 when we tried to visit. However, as the zoo announced the birth of a baby panda later this afternoon, I guess there was good reason for the house to be closed, so Alex might get over his disappointment (he's a huge panda fan)...
