Tasting notes: served with mashed potatoes and green beans. A nice casserole with an excellent flavour. Easy. The sauce was great with the mash. 

Wetland Centre

Another day with a reasonable forecast, unlike the rest of the week, so Alex and I went out again - this time on our own - to the Wetland Centre. We had a nice time with just the two of us - it's nice for him to sometimes get to be the one to decide what to do and how long to stay with any one activity (ok, sometimes I moved him on a bit, but at least no sisters bossing him around!).

We had a few visitors during our picnic lunch. The geese were, not surprisingly, a bit more pushy than the crows!

Lots of heron were there. 

A walk in Morden Hall Park, and so on

Alex and I decided to take advantage of the temporary respite in bad weather and head out to Morden Hall Park for a walk (and along to Deen's City Farm and perhaps Merton Abbey Mills, if the weather held up, which it did).  Sarah and her friend Katharine, who had stayed over th enight with us, decided to come along, putting lie to the myth that all teenagers want to do is laze around.

Apparently, there are some things you are never too old for - like climbing tree stumps

and playing Pooh Sticks.

And apparently, never too old for mucking around trying to cross rivers (they gave up and went back, as it was quite chilly and they didn't want to risk falling in and getting wet).

Apr 9th: Creamy chicken masala; okra with mustard seeds

Tasting notes:  This is one of my favourite okra recipes. I know a lot of people don't really like okra, but I'm not one of them. I'm not really that bothered by the fact that it can sometimes be slimy, but if you are put off by that rather than the taste, this recipe might be for you, as it's not at all slimy cooked this way.  The chicken was very nice, mild and creamy but flavourful. 

Apr 8th: Roast pork, roast potatoes, cabbage, gravy

Recipe Source: no recipe, but I do always take the crackling off when I take the meat out to rest and put it back in at a high temp when I finish the potatoes - this makes it extra crispy...

Apr 7th: Quick Courgette Lasagne

Tasting Notes: Geoff thought this had too much chili in it, as he felt the flavour of the courgette was somewhat overpowered. I disagreed, but I might cut back a little next time as I don't think it would hurt any. Excellent texture, courgette not soggy - we doubled the recipe, although as it happens, neither girl was home for dinner. Still, there's some for lunch tomorrow!

Apr 6th: Beef Bourginon, carrots, saute potatoes

Tasting Notes: This is one of the best slow-cooker cookbooks I think  - fairly sophisticated without being too complicated. I've made a number of the recipes in it, including this one previously. It's an excellent way to use up the better part of a bottle of red wine won on a tombola or in a raffle, which isn't very nice to drink...

Apr 5th: Sticky chicken wings with lemon, green beans, curly fries & potatoes

Tasting notes: Always tasty. Very sticky. We don't have this often, as it's fried, but it's a nice treat once in a while. Most of the potatoes were chunks done in the oven with a few curly fries leftover from a bag in the freezer...

A visit to the V & A

I can't begin to count the number of photos I must have from trips to the V&A, which is, after all, the best museum in London - possibly the world. We went up on today to meet Geoff's brother John, who came down from Leicestershire for the day - a little V&A, some Thai food for lunch, then back to the V&A for some more. We mainly hit the ceramics and glass galleries, though we did also walk through the ironwork gallery, which I love, and the theatre exhibit.

Tasting Notes:  This tasted really nice, but didn't puff up as high as the recipe implied (or the photo showed) - this is possibly because I put a bit more bacon in it than the recipe called for, so perhaps the extra fat hindered it.  It wasn't flat, but just didn't get the high edge like in the photo. We had it with a big salad - it was very tasty...

Tasting Notes:  Very tasty, and despite the fact that it requires lengthy cooking, extremely easy to do. The mango really worked well with the pilau - a great contrast in both flavour and texture. Leftovers for lunch!

2005 covers only August - December. This is the point at which I started keeping track of my reading again, after not doing so since 2003 (I do have a book which starts in January 1999 and goes up until 2003 - I will spare you those reads, though) - I guess 2003 was really busy and I either didn't read much, or got out of the habit of writing down what I did read. Considering that my 3rd child was born in Feb 2003, I can't imagine why I was busy at all!

Tasting notes: I added some swede, as I had half of one in the fridge which wanted using. It was ok, but I don't think it added much.  In general, very tasty, though of course there were complaints about the aubergine...
