As promised, the second in the series. I was reminded again of the interesting way this series is structured: the first book has a straightforward timeline with protagonists and an antagonist in a particular time; the second book goes back in time and to a slightly different land to deal with almost a completely different set of characters, picking up the backstory of the antagonist from the first book almost as an incidental sideline to the plot; the third book deals with the consquences of the plot of the first book and the antagonist therein. (Trying to avoid spoilers, so I appreciate that's vague...) But it works very well, even though the second book in many ways doesn't seem that connected to the other two. Unusual.
