Book 42: Straight Man by Richard Russo

Enjoyed this - found it very funny (though luckily, not trying-too-hard funny), with not a little ring of truth about campus life, middle age, underachievement, relationships and whatnot. This is the second book I've read by Russo (the first being Empire Falls, which won a Pullitzer Prize - deservedly) and it won't be the last. He reminds me of John Irving, whose books I've always liked. This one took a little longer for me to settle into, but definitely worth a read once you are into it.  Nice review in the Guardian - says it all far better than I could - at least than I could without a lot more effort than I'm willing to put in for the rate I get paid...
